What can Shopify discounts do without an app?
Shopify discounts cover codes, automatic discounts, buy X get Y and free shipping with no app. Check these before you install anything.
- Discount codes. Customers enter a code at checkout. A store can hold up to 20,000,000 unique codes.
- Automatic discounts. They apply in the cart and at checkout with no code. A store can run 25 active automatic discounts. Discounts from apps count toward the 25.
- Amount off. A percentage or fixed amount off products, collections or the whole order. Each discount can require a minimum spend or a minimum quantity.
- Buy X get Y. The "get" item can be free, a percentage off or an amount off. Shopify's buy X get Y help page says it never adds the "get" item to the cart. The shopper has to add it.
- Free shipping. A code or automatic discount for customers who meet your rules. It's one of Shopify's built-in discount types.
- Combinations. Product, order and shipping discounts combine when each discount allows it. Two product discounts on the same line item need Shopify Plus. Shoppers can enter up to 5 product or order codes and 1 shipping code per order.
Shopify's help center sends stores that need tiered discounts to apps from the App Store. Shopify Plus stores can also use Checkout Blocks. A reward bar on your storefront isn't part of Shopify's discount settings.

Discount apps share Shopify's limit of 25 active automatic discounts per store. Discounts from apps count toward the 25. Every app on your store draws from that one pool. Count your slots before you add a second app.

Combinations follow Shopify's rules, not the app's. Product, order and shipping discounts combine only when each discount allows it. Two product discounts on the same line item need Shopify Plus. Two shipping discounts never apply to one order.
