Your Shopify Header Is the First Thing Customers See - Here's How to Make It Count

The header is the single most-viewed element of your entire Shopify store. It sits at the top of every page, every visit, for every customer — which makes it the most powerful piece of real estate you have for setting a first impression, communicating your brand, and keeping shoppers navigating deeper into your store rather than bouncing. Yet for most merchants, it's also one of the most frustrating elements to change.

Shopify's default header is a global element baked into your theme — not a Section you can freely swap out like a homepage banner or a features row. Out of the box you get limited logo placement options (left or centre), a basic navigation menu, and an optional announcement bar.

Want a centred logo with navigation below it? A transparent header that overlays your hero image? A header with a promotional USP bar, search bar prominence, or a different layout entirely? In most themes, any of that requires editing Liquid code — and one wrong line can break your navigation store-wide.

That's the problem Section Store solves. Rather than touching your theme's core header.liquid file or hiring a developer, you can install a pre-built, fully customisable header Section directly into your existing theme for a one-time $9 purchase. It works with all Online Store 2.0 themes, is customised entirely inside Shopify's built-in Theme Editor, and takes minutes to set up. It's particularly valuable for brands where the header layout matters — fashion, beauty, lifestyle, premium DTC — where a polished, on-brand header is table stakes. Here's how to do it.

HOW TO ADD A CUSTOM HEADER SECTION TO YOUR SHOPIFY THEME

Follow these simple steps to install and customise a custom header Section on your Shopify store.

01

Install the Section Store App

If you haven't already, install the Section Store app from the Shopify App Store. It's free to install — you only pay for the Sections you choose to purchase.

02

Browse the Header Sections

Inside the Section Store app, search for "Header" to browse the available designs. You'll find layouts ranging from minimal single-row headers to multi-row designs with announcement bars, centred logos, and prominent navigation — pick the one that matches your brand.

03

Purchase the Section

Click on your chosen header Section and complete the one-time $9 purchase. It's yours permanently — no subscription, no recurring fees — and can be installed across multiple themes within your store.

04

Install the Section to Your Theme

Navigate to My Sections within the Section Store app. Click the Install button next to your chosen header Section and select the theme you want to add it to. Section Store installs the .liquid file directly into your theme — no copy-pasting code required.

05

Open the Shopify Theme Editor

In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes and click Customize on your live theme to open the Theme Editor.

06

Navigate to the Header Area

In the Theme Editor, look at the top of the left-hand sidebar for the Header group. This is the global header section that appears across all pages in your store — changes made here apply everywhere automatically.

07

Add Your New Header Section

Click Add Section within the header area. Search for "ss - Header" and select your purchased Section from the results. All Section Store Sections are prefixed with "SS" — for example, "ss - Header #3" — making them easy to identify in the editor.

08

Hide the Default Theme Header

Click on your theme's existing header section in the sidebar and use the eye icon to hide it. This removes the original header from view without deleting it, so only your new custom header is visible to customers.

09

Customise Your Header

Click on your new header Section in the sidebar to open its settings. Upload your logo, configure your navigation menu links, set your colours and typography, and adjust any layout options — all without touching any code. Changes preview live as you make them.

10

Save Your Theme

Click Save in the top-right corner of the Theme Editor. Your new header is now live across every page of your store.

WHO IS THIS MOST USEFUL FOR?

A custom header Section is especially valuable if your current theme's header layout doesn't match your brand aesthetic, if you want a centred logo or a two-row layout that your theme doesn't support natively, or if you're running a store where premium presentation directly affects purchasing decisions — fashion, beauty, homewares, and lifestyle brands in particular. It's also a great option if you've switched themes and your new theme's header doesn't feel right, but you don't want to rebuild your whole store design around it.
